The Four Evangelists, from the Book of Kells, c. 800

Folio 27v. from the Book of Kells, highly illuminated masterpiece of Irish medieval manuscripts. The Four Evangelists are represented, as in much medieval art, with their symbolic attributes: Matthew is the Winged Man, Mark the Lion, Luke the Calf (or Bull), and John the Eagle. These symbolic ideas are derived from the vision of Ezekiel.
